"The King Is Back" is the ninth episode of Season 1 of Sliders. It originally aired on May 10, 1995. Rembrandt Brown is mistaken for his celebrity double on an alternate Earth where his solo singing career attained the status of Elvis Presley's.

Plot[]

With the others, Quinn Mallory narrowly escapes from being sentenced to death for a crime his double committed. Upon arrival on another parallel Earth, Rembrandt is recognized by almost everyone the group encounters. A film taken of Maximillian Arturo, Quinn, Rembrandt, and Wade Welles arouses suspicions that the "Cryin' Man" has returned after his supposed death eight years ago. Autograph seekers and other rabid fans clamor outside the hotel where the Sliders are staying, and Captain Jack Brim, the man who started Rembrandt's solo career on this world, wants to stage a concert the following night to celebrate his return. As they sneak out of the hotel, Rembrandt is knocked out by Maurice Fish, a member of the Spinning Topps that Rembrandt used to sing with.

Maurice threatens to kill Rembrandt because his "return" devalues his own musical career as himself and as a Rembrandt impersonator. Captain Jack refuses to call the police for fear of bad publicity, and this world's Rembrandt returns to help the other Sliders free him - he wasn't actually deceased. They free Rembrandt just before Maurice tries to murder him, and the Sliders' Rembrandt agrees to stay and take over the singing career of his double so that the double can return to the quiet life he's enjoyed. Farewells are said, and this world's Rembrandt looks on from backstage just before the concert begins (and seven minutes before the next slide).

When Wade commends this world's Rembrandt for giving up a million dollars a song, he changes his mind and decides that he wants his career back after all. The Rembrandt double goes on stage and reveals himself. Upon the duo's completion of Rembrandt's signature track "Tears In My 'Fro", Rembrandt's double congratulates him on being "the best Rembrandt impersonator of them all" and proceeds to own the stage.

Rembrandt slides with his friends, and at the end of the episode he and Quinn are working as ice cream vendors.
